The good news: a quick check and a little preparation can prevent a full-blown situation

Why Breaks Are High-Risk for Lice


During the school week, cases are often caught early. But during breaks:

  • Kids are together longer (sleepovers, camps, cousins)
  • Families travel and share beds, pillows, and brushes
  • Routine checks don’t happen


By the time school resumes, lice has often had 7–10 days to multiply.

Your 5-Minute Pre-Break Lice Check & Post Check 

Before travel or gatherings: 

  1. Check behind the ears and at the nape of the neck
  2. Look for tiny tan/gray bugs or oval eggs glued to the hair shaft
  3. If your child is scratching more than usual, check again
  4. Use a metal lice comb if you have one (a household STAPLE)

Winter Break Prevention Tips

  • Avoid sharing brushes, hats, headphones, or hair accessories
  • Braid or tie long hair during group activities
  • Pack a lice comb and prevention hair ties  ( it has repellent essential oils) when traveling
  • Do a quick check when your child returns home
