Why may it be possible to see some residual nits in my hair after I did the heated air treatment?

First, let's talk about what are nits?

Nits are lice eggs and it’s important to get rid of them so that the head lice don’t just come back when all the new eggs hatch. Female lice can lay 3 to 10 eggs a day, leaving behind a lot of nits. When checking for an infestation it’s more common to see the nits than the head lice crawling around, but it is important to remember the nits couldn’t have gotten there without the adult lice. As lice continue to lay more eggs, and eggs continue to hatch, the infestation worsens and the chance of spreading lice likens. It’s important when treating lice to be sure your treatment works for both adult lice and nits.

What is the heated air treatment and how does it work?

The heated air device is used to desiccate the lice eggs, which kills them. No solution or chemical has the capability to penetrate the protective shell of the nit (lice egg), so the only truly ovicidal treatment is to physically destroy the nit. The FloSonix device delivers carefully controlled, heated air directly to the scalp and hair, dehydrating the lice eggs. The temperature of the air is cooler than most hair dryers but delivered at a much higher flow rate. A unique applicator tip that is specially designed to penetrate beyond the insulating layer of the hair is used, to lift the hair slightly while directing the airflow onto the lice eggs.

Lice Mama's trained FloSonix technician follows a timed, sequential, pattern using the device. The operator uses an overlapping technique so that the entire head has been covered by the end of the 30-minute treatment. The standard duration of the treatment is 30 minutes, but may vary a few minutes on either side, depending on the age of the client and amount of hair (a small child with thin hair will take slightly less time than an adult female with long, thick hair).

Once the heat treatment has been completed, the technician will provide a comb out for cosmetic purposes. A spray bottle of water will be used to dampen the hair and the technician will use a Terminator lice comb and our enzymatic mousse to remove the dehydrated eggs and empty casings. This is a complimentary service for cosmetic purposes only, as nothing viable remains in the hair. We allow approximately 30 minutes for the comb out. We make every effort to clear the hair of egg casings so if/when the client returns to school or work and their hair is inspected, nothing will be seen. In heavy infestations or with thick and/or curly hair, this can be challenging. In this case, we may have to provide a clinic note confirming treatment has been completed and that anything found in the hair are simply desiccated egg casings. In situations where a student is required to be “nit free”, we will dry the hair and visually inspect the casings and remove them manually.

When it comes to combating head lice, choosing the right treatment is paramount. While various options exist, the Lice Mamas Heated Air device stands out as a superior choice for its efficacy, safety, and convenience. Say goodbye to lice worries and hello to lice-free living with Lice Mamas in NYC!

PLEASE NOTE
