How Do I Know If I Have Nits or Dandruff/Dry Scalp?

Let’s be real—if your scalp’s itchy and you're spotting little white things in your hair, it’s easy to go into panic mode. Is it lice? Or just dandruff? Here’s how to figure it out without spiraling.

First up: What are nits?

Nits are lice eggs. They’re tiny (like, sesame seed tiny), oval-shaped, and usually white or yellowish. The key giveaway? They stick to your hair shaft and don’t budge. If you try to flick it off and it won’t move? Yep, probably a nit. They love to hang out near the scalp—especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.

And dandruff?

Dandruff is just dry, flaky skin. It’s usually caused by dryness, oil buildup, or even a reaction to hair products. Dandruff flakes are loose, kind of random-looking, and easy to brush off. You might see them on your shoulders or in your brush. It can still be itchy, but it's totally different from lice.

Quick way to tell the difference:

  • Nits: Stuck on the hair, oval, and won’t move when you try.
  • Dandruff: Flaky, falls off easily, more random in shape.
  • Itching a lot? Could be either—but if it’s lice, you’ll probably feel little crawling sensations too (ew, but true).

Still not sure?

That’s what we’re here for. At Lice Mamas, we’ve seen it all, and we’ll figure it out for you—no judgment, just fast, natural, effective help. Reach out and we’ll get you sorted.
